Once the carbon footprint has been calculated, the next step is to take action. The improvement plan allows you to set clear emission reduction goals and define how to achieve them.
🪜 Steps to develop the Emission Reduction Plan
1. What amount of GHG am I responsible for?
- Carbon footprint calculation: Establishes the starting point. Identifies emission sources and critical areas within the organization.
- Base year selection: Can be a specific year, an average, or a rolling year.
2. How can I reduce my GHG emissions?
- Identify energy efficiency measures and consumption reduction actions.
- Actions can be related to heating/cooling, lighting, transportation, refrigeration, equipment, or organizational habits.
Check the list of suggested measures by IDAE in areas such as insulation, LEDs, solar panels, sustainable transport, among others.
3. How much will I reduce?
- Define quantifiable targets:
- Type of target: absolute (tCOâ‚‚eq) or relative (intensity).
- Target level: percentage or specific numeric value.
- Base year target: fixed or rolling.
- Deadline: short or medium term.
- Commitment period: annual or multi-year.
4. How will I implement the Plan?
- Assign responsibilities and execution timeline.
- Prioritize measures based on impact, cost, and ease of implementation.
- Include continuous improvements and periodic review mechanisms.
